Cooking Classes in Riviera Maya: Today Traditional Mexican flour tortillas
Serves: 20 medium size tortillas
Cooks: 1 hour total
Difficulty: Easy
Nutrition facts: Calcium, Iron, Iodine, Magnesium, Vitamin E
Ingredients:
500 gr. of multipurpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
100g of all-vegetable shortening
1 cup of warm water
Making:
Place the dry ingredients, flour and salt, in a medium bowl. Then, add the all-vegetable shortening and form a sandblasting, crumbling with your fingers.
Finally, add the warm water little by little and begin to unite everything until forming a smooth dough bun, without lumps. If it is necessary to add more warm water than the indicated, do it in tablespoons, again, little by little. The dough should be smooth and not stick to your hands.
Divide the dough into 20 balls (conventional size) or 10 balls (burrito or wrap size), after that, let stand approximately 20 minutes.
Then, heat a comal or a good size non-stick pan, over medium heat. Next, roll out each ball, one at the time, and start cooking, approximately 30 seconds per side. Do it until the dough begin to inflate and form the classic golden circles. Meanwhile place the tortillas on a clean kitchen towel as they are made.
Tip: Keep the tortillas in an airtight bag or container, wrapped in the kitchen towel to keep the moist. If are not all finished right away 🙂
